Homeless People welcome for Newyears dinner at In de Waag

On Sunday the 15th of January 2012 mr. Paul Willemse, in cooperation with Restaurant-Café In de Waag organises a full NewYear’s dinner for the homeless people of Amsterdam. Mr. Paul Willemse is voluntair and initiator of this dinner which he has organised for the 14th year in a row. Around 100 homeless people are expected to attend the dinner in the warm atmosphere of the Waag.

Some extra attention for the people around you and in special for the homeless people of Amsterdam; that’s the idea behind this dinner. Restaurant-Café In de Waag hosts this New Year’s dinner for the 6th year now. A completly organised Dutch meal, with a three course menu and off course some (alcoholic) drinks, are offered to the homeless people by the restaurant.
Mr. Paul Willemse is taking care of the invitations among the homeless people.

The restaurant will be closed on this evening from16.30 h. for all other guests.

Chief cook Dorian Zomeren cook snacks from the Christmas menu. We offer you the opportunity to gain inspiration for your Christmas dinner and questions to the chief cook.The tasting will be framed by musician Franc Janssen.

RESTAURANT – CAFE IN DE WAAG 1996 – 2011

This astonishing building, in the middle of the Nieuwmark square, was build in 1488 as one of the gates to the city of Amsterdam. Throughout the centuries the building has had many different functions.

Since 1996 Restaurant-Cafe In de Waag is situated on the ground floor of the building. This is why we celebrate our 15-year anniversary this year. To commemorate this milestone we have had these beautiful plates designed. The plate shows a drawing, which is a copy of painting drawn around 1880. Unfortunately the painter is unknown.

The plates are for sale for €19,50. They make a great gift or souvenir! If you are interested, please ask any of our staff.

De Waag 3D model

The Waag on the Nieuwmarkt is the oldest secular building in Amsterdam. The first stone was laid on 28 April 1488. The building originally formed the eastern gateway in the city wall and was called the St. Anthony Gate. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the city wall was demolished, the water round the gate was drained and place between the two gateways was covered. This building then became a weigh-house. Heavy articles, such as anchors and cannons were weighed here. Several guilds were also situated within the building. In 1819 the city weigh-house was closed. Currently a restaurant and a centre for new media are housed in the building.
